DestinationsSouth Africa Meeting the Ndebele people in the Ndzundza tribe Johannesburg written by adminGlamWebwise LOCATION: Zebra lodge Legends COST: $15AU each person (Plus tips to the people when you are there) After seeing the Ndebele cultures distinctively colourful dress and brightly coloured geometric painted homes browsing places to visit when in Johannesberg it went straight up the list after the Safari. We did not book ahead, however when we got to the Lodge was asked to wait 15 minutes whilst the women got ready. We then were driven down to the village and greeted at the gate by Tammy who walked us through the history of the tribe. She explained the tools they used to paint the very colourful homes, created with a mix of rocks and feathers. The intricately painted artwork was done by internationally renowned artist Esther Mahlangu who resides at the village with her family. The people we met were all friendly and enjoyed showing us around. Granny walked out of the hut grinning with pride as she displayed her traditional costume. In ore – I blurted out – Can I try it on? They looked at each other shocked. Uh oh, I had offended someone here. They walked off whispering and I was nervous I had overstepped the mark. Then with big smile on her face granny said sure! They were just shocked as no one had ever asked them before and they would love it if we did! Before I knew it we were we sitting down on mats surrounded by beaded adornments of necklaces, ankle bracelets and beaded belts. I was told that having 4 rings around my legs signified that I was not yet married – Noted. Maybe the boys in the village might get the hint ha ha. The costumes were fairly heavy and bulky, not an outfit that you would be able to bust a move or get anywhere fast in. But boy were they beautiful! and we did feel very special wearing them. I particular was fond of my new leg accessories. After the ladies finished there fuss over us – which we did not mind at all we all. They insisted we take photos with them all. It was an experience that we will never forget and if you are ever near Johannesburg encourage you to go get cultured for an afternoon with the beautiful Ndebele people. Big thanks to Demi, Grandma, Tammy and the Tribe.
